This month at Organizations by Design Inc our focus has been on Women Leaders in our workplaces.

We explored the external barriers that are still experienced by women leaders in 2024. And shared some strategies that men and women can use to shift cultures, and structures in today’s workplaces- to lift women up!

Today the focus is on internal barriers that hold us back as women, from reaching our potentials in our lives, leadership & careers.

The most significant factors in preventing us from attaining our highest potentials as women and women leaders are:

Our internal barriers in the form of old, limiting beliefs and patterns, an inability to source power outside of logical and linear ways of creating, and an inability to identify needs and access resources

Dr. Zammit’s research shows that ….

…Women no longer simply want to achieve success by today’s masculine standards. Women are yearning for something more. They are making the shift from “achievement” to self-actualization”.

…Women aim way lower than their actual possibilities. Women are held back by invisible barriers that severely limit them from being in touch with their true potential.

…Both men and women will expect less from women and underestimate their potential as well.

…Women’s expectations for themselves and their lives are 50% lower than those of men with the same abilities and qualifications.

…Women who are ambitious and reach higher are held back by the “Power Penalty”.  Meaning they are judged, by both women and men, as being less likable for exhibiting traits defined as ‘masculine’.

….Women are often unaware of the extent of their competence, brilliance and gifts and generally will underrepresent their achievements.

….Women tend towards de-authorizing their authority in relationships with others who have higher status.

…..Women give away their inner authority in the face of experts way more than men do –they are deferential to authority in masculine work cultures.

Dr. Claire Zammit’s doctoral research into the barriers holding women back from their highest possibilities has revealed that the primary barriers to women’s success at higher levels are internal.

These hidden barriers act as an “inner glass ceiling” that makes it impossible to create an outcome that doesn’t line up with your own current internal “set-point.” But, these are within our control and can be changed.
