Have you ever achieved a phenomenal feat, only to whisper to yourself, “I don’t deserve this,” or “They’ll find out I’m a fraud”? If so, you’re not alone. Welcome to the club – the not-so-secret society of high-achieving women plagued by self-doubt and old stories that no longer resonate.
What is Imposter Syndrome?
Imposter syndrome, also known as the “fraudulent feeling,” is a psychological phenomenon where successful individuals persistently doubt their accomplishments and fear being exposed as a “fake.” It manifests as a persistent feeling of inadequacy and a belief that success is due to luck, external validation, or simply fooling others.
This internal critic can be incredibly debilitating. Studies suggest that up to 70% of successful high achievers experience it at some point, with women being particularly susceptible. It can hold you back from taking risks, pursuing opportunities, and fully embracing your leadership potential. But here’s the good news, Organizations by Design Inc. has adopted a coaching model for women. It is being used globally to empower women by tapping into their Feminine Power Qualities.
Why Does Imposter Syndrome Affect Women Leaders More?
Several factors contribute to imposter syndrome in women leaders:
Socialization: From a young age, girls are often conditioned to be more self-critical unlike boys; they attribute it to ‘who they are’ rather than behaviours. Add women can be reluctant to seek opportunities outside of their past and current frames of reference.
Double Bind: Women leaders often face a “double bind” where they’re expected to be both strong and competent (masculine traits) and nurturing and collaborative (feminine traits).
Power Paradox: In a masculine society that defines achievement, both women and men, can respond negatively to a woman that seeks a higher status.
Lack of Role Models & Reference Points: The scarcity of women in leadership positions can make it difficult for women to see themselves reflected in positions of power. This can fuel self-doubt and make it harder to believe they belong. And women need to create reference points outside of their past and current experiences to self-actualize into new roles.
Confronting the Imposter
According to Dr. Claire Zammit the new proven coaching process, that OBD Inc. now fully integrates in our programs and coaching model, which has been effective in helping women to overcoming imposter syndrome.
It’s a simple yet powerful three-step process. First, turning our powerful selves to the places that are stuck in blame and shame. Secondly, unlocking our feminine navigation system to access deeper knowing. And, lastly learning to receive and generate support through a matrix of relationships with others.
